The 134-room hotel is the first Southeast Asian outpost for award-winning designer hotel collection QT Hotels & Resorts, which is part of EVT Hotels & Resorts.

Just a year old, but QT Singapore has already made waves by being the only Singapore hotel on TIME magazine’s World’s Greatest Places list for 2025.

In a former life, the 1927 neo-classical style building which houses the hotel served as the headquarters of the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company. It then became the Cable and Wireless Building, and in 1995, the Telecommunications Authority of Singapore. In 2001, the Ogilvy Centre took over, and in 2014, the building housed SO/ Singapore. Between September 2022 and April 2024, the building was home to Hotel Telegraph, Singapore.

The four-storey curved building on Robinson Road was given conservation status in 2000, preserving its stately stone façade with symmetrical coupled columns, recessed balconies guarded with cast-iron balustrades and semi-circular arch openings.

Mention Changi and most people will immediately think of Changi Airport. However, a short jaunt away lies Changi Village, celebrated for its laid-back vibe, rich historical sites, and scenic beachfront. It’s also a popular spot for hawker food, and the gateway to Pulau Ubin, a rustic island located just off the northeastern corner of Singapore.

We share seven best things to do in and around Changi Village.

1. Discover stories of courage and resilience at Changi Chapel and Museum

The museum tells the personal stories of prisoners of war and civilians interned in Changi prison camp during the Japanese Occupation.

Spread across eight galleries are 114 artefacts, including a never-before-seen 400-page diary, a dinner menu and a toothbrush fashioned from scratch, which shed light on the daily lives of the internees, their responses to the challenges they faced, and their eventual liberation. Step into a re-created Changi Gaol cell where the internees were housed to get a sense of the cramped living confines of the internees.

The Changi Chapel is modelled after St George’s Church, one of the numerous churches built by the prisoners of war in Changi during their internment
Photo: Changi Chapel and Museum

The museum offers a free English guided tour every Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at 11am, while the Mandarin guided tour is conducted on Saturdays and Sundays at 11.30am. The tour lasts about an hour and must be booked in advance online.

There’s also a Temi guided tour, led by an interactive robot, which lets you explore the museum through the eyes of a soldier who was interned at the Changi prison camp.

2. Learn about Changi’s crucial role in Singapore’s defence during WWII at Johore Battery

Go round the bend to Upper Changi Road North and into Cosford Road, and you’ll see Johore Battery looming ahead. It is a full-sized replica built in 2002, based on the main British coastal artillery defence network on the northeastern coast of Singapore.

Built in the late 1930s, Johore Battery was the main artillery battery of the British coastal artillery defence network
Photo: National Library Board

Each gun is positioned 500 metres from each other in a row and has a 16.5-metre-long barrel to target both land and sea objects. The vertical shafts lead to a network of tunnels that are connected to a bunker housing the ammunition.

The battery was named in honour of Johor’s Sultan Ibrahim who had contributed £500,000 for the British war campaign and also as a Silver Jubilee gift for King George V.

3. Soak up scenic views and spot wildlife on Changi Boardwalk

6. Take a bumboat from Changi Point Ferry Terminal to Pulau Ubin

At the top, soak up sweeping views of Pekan Quarry, Johor Strait and beyond.

Nature lovers must explore the Chek Jawa wetlands, one of Singapore’s richest ecosystems.
A “Wildlife Sightings” sign is the last thing you’d expect to see in a Singapore hotel. Unless you’re a guest of Mandai Rainforest Resort by Banyan Tree, nestled within the 126-hectare Mandai Wildlife Reserve, home to five wildlife parks, in Singapore’s northern region.

Surrounded on all sides by thick rainforest that border Upper Seletar Reservoir, Singapore’s first Banyan Tree resort was designed around numerous mature trees (look out for a 12-metre-tall Rain Tree at the entrance), while the wings of the resort have been elevated from the ground to allow native wildlife like macaques, squirrels, monitor lizards, snakes and wild boars to roam freely.

The luxe resort, designed by award-winning international design consultancy WOW Architects to seamlessly blend in with the surrounding forest scape, has 24 hovering treehouses with private patios, and 314 rooms and suites housed in a five-storey building.

Boasting biophilic design elements and built with sustainability in mind, the resort has incorporated energy-saving measures like a well-ventilated open-air lobby that’s furnished with benches and tables crafted from repurposed wood; naturally-ventilated rooms with windows that fully open; ambient room temperatures set to a minimum of 24°C to mirror the cool atmospheric temperatures of tropical rainforests; and flushing systems that are powered by collected rainwater.

Once an ethnic enclave for the Malay community in the 1800s, Kampung Gelam or Kampong Glam has since evolved to become a vibrant hub of youth culture and gastronomic wonders today. Forget the usual tourist traps – here’s where age-old traditions and trendy vibes collide, and there’s no better place to experience this than at the food spots on Haji Lane and Arab Street.

Haji Lane
Photo: Singapore Tourism Board

For those wondering, “Is Haji Lane the same as Arab Street?” The answer is: Nope! Arab Street is a broader, bustling thoroughfare, while Haji Lane is its narrow, quirky, and incredibly photogenic neighbour. Both, however, form the heart of Kampong Glam’s vibrant culture and delicious food scene.

Arab Street
Photo: Singapore Tourism Board

TIPS

Best time to visit Lau Pa Sat

Visit during off-peak hours, such as mid-morning or mid-afternoon, to avoid the lunchtime crowds. If you’re trying to grab a seat at Satay Street (which is only set up in the evenings), arrive early (before 8pm) to secure a table.

Payment methods

Lau Pa Sat stalls accept various payment methods, including cash, credit cards, and mobile payment options like PayNow and GrabPay.

Seating

Lau Pa Sat offers both indoor and outdoor seating options. The indoor seating provides a more air-conditioned and comfortable environment, while the outdoor seating offers a lively atmosphere, especially in the evenings.

Etiquette

Tray return kiosks are available around the hawker centre, so be mindful of food waste and dispose of your trash responsibly. If you’re ordering your food to-go, you can bring your own reusable containers, water bottles and utensils to reduce waste.

Your visit to Singapore isn’t complete if you haven’t explored Little India, one of Singapore’s most colourful ethnic enclaves. The bustling streets of Little India are filled with traditional eateries, vibrant markets, iconic temples and hidden gems that truly reflect Indian culture.

From indulging in delicious street food to exploring unique shops, here are six ways to experience the rich culture of Little India.

1. Dive into the past at Indian Heritage Centre

Step into the Indian Heritage Centre (IHC), where history comes alive in the heart of Little India.

Not your average museum, the IHC serves as a vibrant cultural hub within the Singapore National Heritage Board’s museum family. It’s a place where the past meets the present through a dynamic calendar of performances, workshops, symposiums, masterclasses, and festive events that celebrate the Indian community in Singapore.

Photo: Singapore Tourism Board

As you explore IHC’s five permanent galleries, you’ll uncover a treasure trove of artefacts and stories that spotlight the Indian community’s rich history. From ceremonial gold to rubies and textiles, the IHC displays an array of personal and communal treasures.

Enhance your visit with virtual guides and interactive gameplay that make history come alive and relevant. These engaging features are designed to deepen your understanding of the exhibits, while ongoing research initiatives promise the thrill of new discoveries and stories with each visit.

Alternatively, join a free guided tour led by knowledgeable docents who provide insights into the scholarly research and personal stories behind the exhibits. Starting from the 1st-century interactions, these 60-minute tours offer a comprehensive exploration of the Indian legacy in Singapore. For those visiting in groups, the IHC can accommodate up to 20 guests per tour.

2. Discover Indian cuisine at Little India’s traditional eateries

Ready to tickle your taste buds? Embark on a gastronomic adventure through the heart of Little India, where the tantalising aroma of authentic Indian cuisine and aromatic spices fill the streets and beckon food lovers from all walks of life.

As you meander through the streets, the fusion of flavours from different regions of India fills the air, inviting you to sample a delectable array of Indian street food.

Whether you’re a fan of vegetarian dishes or a connoisseur of succulent meats and seafood, explore the countless eateries and choose from a wide range of vegetarian, meat, and seafood dishes.

Biryani is a dish of basmati rice flavoured with fragrant spices layered over tender and succulent pieces of meat
Photo: @eatinginberlin/Instagram

A must-try is the iconic biryani, a flavourful rice dish that’s a staple in Indian cuisine. It’s traditionally made by layering basmati rice with marinated meats like chicken, mutton, lamb, beef, prawn or fish, all infused with a variety of fragrant spices. Vegetarian versions are equally popular, featuring hearty vegetables and sometimes paneer (Indian cottage cheese) as substitutes for meat.

As you explore, make sure to drop by some of the famous Indian eateries and cafes here such as Mr Biryani, Madras New Woodlands, and The Banana Leaf Apolo, for an experience wrapped in tradition so much so that it will transport your senses to the heart of South India.

3. Explore Little India’s vibrant shops and markets

Venture into the colourful markets and stores where you will find a variety of traditional Indian clothing, aromatic spices, unique trinkets and more. As you walk down the bustling streets, spot the vibrant displays of traditional Indian clothing, with mannequins draped in elegant sarees and sparkling accessories. The elegance of sarees, the shimmer of bangles, and the rich colours of tunics, plus the symphony of Kollywood or Bollywood beats and spiritual music emanating from the CD shops, create a lively backdrop.

Photo: Danny Santos

You’ll definitely come across stalls that sell jasmine flowers crafted into floral wreaths. These fragrant decorations are not only beautiful but also hold cultural significance, often used in weddings, religious ceremonies, and as offerings in temples.

A must-visit is Tekka Market, a bustling wet market along Buffalo Road, known for its array of fresh produce and affordable goods. The first floor is a foodie’s delight, featuring a food centre where you can indulge in everything from aromatic biryani to thosai (thin, crispy pancake). The other half of the first floor houses the wet market section, where locals shop for their daily meats, seafood and more at competitive prices.

Photo: Danny Santos

If you’re in the mood for some serious shopping, head up to the second floor where you’ll find an array of traditional Indian costumes. It’s a haggler’s paradise – be prepared to negotiate to snag the best deals. Hidden among these stalls, tucked away in random corners are tailors, surrounded by piles of fabric for custom-made garments.

For those who love a good find, make Serangoon Road your next stop. Discover a myriad of textiles and accessories that complete a traditional Indian outfit at the shops along the roads. And if your shopping list extends beyond fabric, head to the 24-hour Mustafa Centre, a shopping mall along Syed Alwi Road that offers an extensive range of products – from cosmetics, fragrances and gold jewellery to luggage, electronic items and clothing at affordable prices.

4. Visit Little India’s iconic temples

Uncover the rich history and spiritual significance of Indian culture by visiting the iconic temples in Little India, each brimming with cultural stories and architectural marvels.

A visit to Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple, one of the oldest temples in Singapore, is a must with its intricate architecture and beautiful shrines. Originally known as Soonambu Kambam Kovil or “temple at the village of lime,” it was named after the lime kilns in the area.

In 1908, when daily-rated municipal labourers managed the temple, they imported a statue of the goddess Kali from South India and built the main hall and shrine. By the 1930s, additional significant statues were installed, enhancing its spiritual and architectural richness. Today, it stands as a conserved building, a testament to the enduring legacy of the Indian community in Singapore.

Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple
Photo: Singapore Tourism Board

A 10-minute walk from Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple is Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple, known for its stunning tower adorned with colourful statues of Hindu deities. The temple serves as a focal point for the annual Thaipusam festival, drawing devotees and tourists alike to witness its grand processions.

About 20 minutes away, Masjid Abdul Gafoor is another striking example of the rich architectural heritage found among Singapore’s religious sites. This mosque serves as a living monument to the Tamil and Baweanese pioneers whose contributions were vital to the development of colonial Singapore.

As you wander through these sacred sites, learn about the cultural traditions of these temples, including their religious practices and festivals.

5. Immerse in festive celebrations on Deepavali

Every year, during Deepavali, which usually falls between October and November, Little India transforms into a kaleidoscope of light and colour, with elaborate decorations and lights, celebrating the festival of lights. Since 1989, the Deepavali Light-Up has become a key highlight of Singapore’s cultural calendar.

In 2024, the streets were ablaze with vibrant colours, lighting up more than 2km of the district with a festive brilliance that could light up the night sky.

Photo: Indian Heritage Centre

Lights and decorations aside, this festival also brings with it a flurry of activities. Sample festive flavours through a variety of traditional dishes and sweets at the food bazaar. Right in the heart of this bustling festival is the Deepavali Festival Village along Campbell Lane. This bustling marketplace will be filled with stalls selling traditional Indian clothing, snacks, intricate handicrafts, and festive decorations at a bargain.

6. Try henna art

For a more immersive cultural experience, try henna art, a traditional Indian body art form.

Also known as mehndi, henna is a form of body art from ancient India, where intricate designs are created on a person’s skin using a paste made from the henna plant. It is most commonly associated with weddings and is an essential part of bridal preparations in Indian culture. It is believed to relieve the bride of any stress before her big day and is also thought to bring good fortune and blessings to the bride and groom. Apart from its cultural significance, henna art is also a popular choice for tourists seeking a one-of-a-kind souvenir.

Photo: Singapore Tourism Board

There are several stalls and shops in Little India that offer henna services, each with its unique style of designs. From classic floral motifs to modern designs that twist up the arm in stunning spirals, swing by one of the bustling henna stalls and let the artists work their magic.

A country’s best luxury hotels are often destinations in and of themselves, offering guests much more than a five-star experience.

Just steps away from Singapore’s famous shopping street of Orchard Road is Artyzen Singapore, a visually spectacular luxury hotel which celebrates the Lion City and the elements that make the city-state so captivating.

Arguably the most striking property along Cuscaden Road, the terracotta-hued hotel pays homage to Singapore’s culture, heritage, colours, flavours, garden city reputation as well as its own tropical garden villa past. The hotel grounds were once home to Villa Marie, a 1940s colonial-style bungalow owned by Singaporean botanist and avid orchid cultivator Tan Hoon Siang, the great-grandson of well-known philanthropist Tan Tock Seng.

Drawing inspiration from Villa Marie’s unique botanical and architectural heritage, acclaimed Singapore-based architecture firm ONG&ONG designed the 21-storey hotel as a towering oasis featuring vertically stacked sky villas interspersed with sky gardens on alternating floors.

Inside the 142-room hotel, award-winning Australian interior design studio Nic Graham & Associates reinterprets Singapore’s rich cultural heritage and Villa Marie’s roots through a host of bold and colourful elements including arches, barrel-vaulted ceilings, Peranakan tiles, botanical wallpaper and orchid motifs.

Personalised services are expected at luxury hotels, but Artyzen Singapore goes a step further with its complimentary Courtesy Car service, available between 8am and 8pm daily. The drop-off service covers any destination within a 1.5-km radius of the hotel, which would include popular spots like ION Orchard, TANGS, Paragon, Takashimaya, Apple Orchard Road, Singapore Botanic Gardens and Dempsey Hill.

We highlight five reasons why Artyzen Singapore should be on the radar of luxury travellers looking for a different kind of wow.

1. Enlivened spaces that celebrate Singapore’s culture and heritage

Every space of the hotel is a stylish nod to Singapore’s vibrant culture and rich heritage. At the lobby lounge, tall arches and orchid wallpaper stand out as well as an interwoven rope textured wall art in between the lifts that allude to Singapore’s port-city past.

Step into one of the three lifts and get set for an artistic experience like no other. Each lift features a super Instagrammable backlit backdrop of Singapore’s heritage shophouses, created by local artist Terence Tan.

On floors with guestrooms, elegant ceramics and decor pieces adorn shelves facing the lifts, while corridors are lined with carpets bearing orchid motifs, flanked by wall panels with rattan-like patterns.

Over on Level 5, the hotel’s Wellness and Workout space which houses its spa and 24-hour Technogym-equipped fitness centre, is an Orchid Library where a small collection of moth orchids and other orchid species are showcased amidst lush foliage where plants like Monstera and Rattlesnake Fern thrive.

There are also two yoga pavilions facing a vertical green wall where high-intensity interval training, yoga, mat Pilates, restorative sound meditation, and other wellness classes are conducted.

Keep your eyes peeled for intriguing art pieces, including one which mimics water and another that offers a visual representation of wellness. There’s also a spiral staircase (a common feature of Singapore’s pre-war shophouses), which connects the fourth and fifth floors, where you can soak up views of the neighbourhood.

2. Plush, spacious rooms & suites with a tropical charm

One of the first things you’ll notice as you step into your Deluxe Balcony, Premier Balcony or Grand Terrace Room is the soaring 4-metre timber ceiling and the ceiling fan, a rarity in hotels. Terrace Suites boast barrel-vaulted timber ceilings, adding to the grandeur of the space.

Another rarity is balconies in every room, plus bathtubs in all bathrooms except in rooms with twin beds.

Rooms are decked in herringbone timber flooring, Peranakan porcelain plates, floral motif carpets, colourful cushions, brass light fixtures, black-rimmed archways and headboards featuring heritage shophouses.

Bathrooms sport grey herringbone tiles, cream textured orchid wallpaper and marble surfaces, and are stocked with toiletries from Heeley Parfums Paris that come in eco-friendly aluminium bottles.

For a caffeine boost, insert a Nespresso capsule and hit the button on the Nespresso machine or enjoy a cup of Bacha coffee, while tea drinkers can brew their favourite tea from The 1872 Clipper Tea Co.

3. Spectacular sky-high views, tipples & floating pool at The Roof Garden

For the best aerial views of the Orchard neighbourhood and the lush Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, nothing beats The Roof Garden which houses the hotel’s 25-metre infinity pool.

The pool is equipped with underwater speakers, no less, to create a truly immersive and sensory experience for swimmers.

If you dare, walk towards the glass-bottomed section of the pool for IG-worthy shots! But be sure to shower before dipping into the pool, and see if you can locate the shower head! Clue: take a closer look at the green walls!

Dishes with the wow factor include Indonesian Mud Crab Tart, Scallop, Marron and “Fried Rice”. One of the three Quenino Prelude exquisite bites, Indonesian Mud Crab Tart is topped with caviar, and features the bold and aromatic jungle garlic.

A sophisticated take on Penang’s famous Assam Laksa, Scallop pairs matured oyster muscle with tamarind, ginger flower and clarified Asian tomato essence, topped with julienned slaw in a nod to laksa noodles, and is reimagined as a vibrant salad.

Eating has been known as one of Singapore’s national pastimes, and it’s pretty clear why. Besides well-loved traditional hawker food, the country is also blessed with a myriad of unique restaurants including those that offer extraordinary dining experiences worth going the extra mile for.

Why stick to the usual spots when you can choose to dine in an aircraft-themed space or a modern kelong floating between Pulau Ubin and Changi Point Ferry Terminal?

We shine the spotlight on eight restaurants with cool concepts for your next unforgettable meal!

1. Gardenasia

240 Neo Tiew Crescent

Far from the city centre lies a hidden gem: Gardenasia. Located in a secluded spot in the Kranji countryside, this expansive space is a farm stay and event venue all-in-one. Besides the villas, there’s a quaint and comfy bistro tucked amidst all that lush greenery, the perfect spot for those looking for respite from café crowds in the urban jungle.

What sets this bistro apart is how it creates dishes using local ingredients grown in the surrounding farms. Yes, that means you get the authentic farm-to-table experience!

Photo: Gardenasia

Expect classic Western dishes like Traditional Fish and Chips and Pan-Seared Fish Fillet, prepared using fresh catches of the day including red snapper and sea bass.

Those who prefer local dishes can tuck into local delights like Grilled Ribeye Hor Fun, Hokkien Mee Pasta and Farm Fresh Fish Soup. For light bites, order comforting nibbles such as Mozzarella Cheese Sticks, Popcorn Chicken with Salsa and Prawn Fritters with Wasabi Mayonnaise.

2. Smith Marine Floating Restaurant

95B Pulau Ubin FC97E Pulau Ubin Coastal Area 508325

Fancy reeling in fish and devouring them on the same day? Smith Marine Floating Restaurant is where you can eat your fresh catch!
