One of Singapore’s most iconic heritage buildings in the Central Business District has been refreshed and began a new chapter as QT Singapore, after a stylish overhaul by celebrated Australian interior designer Nic Graham, known for his bold use of colours and playful patterns.

The 134-room hotel is the first Southeast Asian outpost for award-winning designer hotel collection QT Hotels & Resorts, which is part of EVT Hotels & Resorts. 

Just a year old, but QT Singapore has already made waves by being the only Singapore hotel on TIME magazine’s World’s Greatest Places list for 2025.

In a former life, the 1927 neo-classical style building which houses the hotel served as the headquarters of the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company. It then became the Cable and Wireless Building, and in 1995, the Telecommunications Authority of Singapore. In 2001, the Ogilvy Centre took over, and in 2014, the building housed SO/ Singapore. Between September 2022 and April 2024, the building was home to Hotel Telegraph, Singapore.

The four-storey curved building on Robinson Road was given conservation status in 2000, preserving its stately stone façade with symmetrical coupled columns, recessed balconies guarded with cast-iron balustrades and semi-circular arch openings.

We share seven best things to do in and around Changi Village.

1. Discover stories of courage and resilience at Changi Chapel and Museum

The museum tells the personal stories of prisoners of war and civilians interned in Changi prison camp during the Japanese Occupation.

Spread across eight galleries are 114 artefacts, including a never-before-seen 400-page diary, a dinner menu and a toothbrush fashioned from scratch, which shed light on the daily lives of the internees, their responses to the challenges they faced, and their eventual liberation. Step into a re-created Changi Gaol cell where the internees were housed to get a sense of the cramped living confines of the internees.

The museum offers a free English guided tour every Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at 11am, while the Mandarin guided tour is conducted on Saturdays and Sundays at 11.30am. The tour lasts about an hour and must be booked in advance online.

There’s also a Temi guided tour, led by an interactive robot, which lets you explore the museum through the eyes of a soldier who was interned at the Changi prison camp.

2. Learn about Changi’s crucial role in Singapore’s defence during WWII at Johore Battery

Go round the bend to Upper Changi Road North and into Cosford Road, and you’ll see Johore Battery looming ahead. It is a full-sized replica built in 2002, based on the main British coastal artillery defence network on the northeastern coast of Singapore. 

Each gun is positioned 500 metres from each other in a row and has a 16.5-metre-long barrel to target both land and sea objects. The vertical shafts lead to a network of tunnels that are connected to a bunker housing the ammunition.

The battery was named in honour of Johor’s Sultan Ibrahim who had contributed £500,000 for the British war campaign and also as a Silver Jubilee gift for King George V.

3. Soak up scenic views and spot wildlife on Changi Boardwalk

Enjoy a scenic stroll along the coastline on the 2.2-kilometre-long Changi Boardwalk.

There are six distinct sections on the boardwalk: Creek Walk, Beach Walk, Sailing Point Walk, Cliff Walk, Kelong Walk and Sunset Walk. 

The well-lit boardwalk starts from Changi Creek in the east and stretches to the western rocky coast near Changi Beach Club, before finally linking up to Changi Point or Loyang Park Connector at Netheravon Road. 

Catch glimpses of boats ferrying people to nearby offshore islands, anchored yachts, and sunset views during the golden hour. Look out for thriving wildlife along the mangrove coasts such as mudskippers, starfish and crabs, and make sure you have a spare memory card for your camera to capture all the wildlife action!

4. Feast on local hawker favourites at Changi Village Hawker Centre

Tuck into a range of local dishes at Changi Village Hawker Centre. A must-eat is nasi lemak (coconut rice served with a variety of side dishes) from International Muslim Food Stall Nasi Lemak (#01-03), known for its fluffy coconut rice and highly raved sambal chilli, or Mizzy Corner Nasi Lemak (#01-23/26), known for its fragrant rice and crispy fried chicken.

Be sure to dig into some sweet and crunchy pisang goreng (fried banana fritters) at Traditional Million Star Fried Banana (#01-35). 

Also not to be missed is the chicken hor fun (rice noodles) from Weng Kee Original Taste Ipoh Hor Fun (#01-19), a plate of silky rice noodles, topped with succulent fried chicken and laced with gravy.

5. Enjoy a range of water sports activities at Adventure Paddlers  

Fans of water sports can swing by Adventure Paddlers at Ohana Beach House, off Changi Village, to rent equipment like stand-up paddle boards, kayaks and water trikes, and water trampoline for kids for a fun day out at sea.

Kayaking enthusiasts can sign up for “A Trail of Nature”, a four-hour eco-tour that will cover a distance of 10km to 22km across Pulau Ubin, along a secured route where very few have ventured. Among the mangroves, be amused by the wildlife and the serenity. Cruise along the waterway and experience the tranquility within untouched surroundings.

6. Take a bumboat from Changi Point Ferry Terminal to Pulau Ubin

For more outdoor fun and adventure, board a bumboat ($4 per person) at Changi Point Ferry Terminal, a stone’s throw from Changi Village Hawker Centre, to the rustic island of Pulau Ubin. Just a 10-minute boat ride away, Pulau Ubin is a popular spot for cycling, kayaking, birdwatching, hiking and camping (a permit is required to set up tents at campsites).

To explore the island on a two wheels, simply pick up a bicycle from the many rental shops dotted near the jetty at Pulau Ubin. Full-day bike rentals starting from $15. 

Hiking fans can hike up Puaka Hill, the highest peak in Pulau Ubin at 74 metres high. It is fairly steep and rocky, with makeshift ropes as railings providing extra support. At the top, soak up sweeping views of Pekan Quarry, Johor Strait and beyond.  

Nature lovers must explore the Chek Jawa wetlands, one of Singapore’s richest ecosystems. Enjoy a leisurely stroll along the boardwalk and head up the 20-metre-tall Jejawi Tower for an amazing view of the sea, above the towering tree canopies. 

7. Eat your fresh catch at Smith Marine Floating Restaurant

There is no better place to enjoy the freshest seafood than at a kelong (an offshore platform built predominantly with wood). At Smith Marine, Singapore’s first floating kelong dining destination, you can enjoy the ultimate farm-to-table seafood dining experience.

Take a 15-minute bumboat ride from Changi Point Ferry Terminal and catch your own snapper or sea bass at the “sure-catch” pond. You can choose how you’d like your seafood to be cooked and the restaurant will take care of it. The restaurant offers several set menus to satisfy your seafood cravings.

Smith Marine was built in 2006 with a focus on breeding sea bass, tiger grouper, flower crab, mussels, lobsters and other live seafood. Besides eating your heart out, you can also take a short walk on the decks to see how the fish is farmed. 

Advance booking is required as the restaurant does not accept walk-ins. The restaurant will help to arrange a chartered bumboat from Changi Village Ferry Terminal. The boat ride costs $100 for 12 persons for the two-way trip, and payment is to be made directly to the boatman upon embarkation.

Housed in a beautifully restored Victorian-era building, this iconic hawker centre offers a feast for the senses, with its tantalising array of local and international flavours. As it’s close to popular attractions like Marina Bay Sands and Gardens by the Bay, Lau Pa Sat makes a great foodie destination for mid-day lunches and late-night suppers. It even has a number of Michelin Bib Gourmand hawkers, promising some satisfying Singaporean cuisine for both locals and tourists!

With so many hawker stalls to choose from, where do you even start? Well, start with our nine must-eats at the hawker centre which commemorated its 130th anniversary last year. 

1. Best Satay 7 & 8 (Stall FC4 & FC5)

Operating hours: Monday to Friday – 7pm to 3am; Saturday & Sunday – 3pm to 3am

No trip to Lau Pa Sat is complete without indulging in some satay (grilled marinated meat on skewers, served with spicy peanut sauce, ketupat [rice cakes], cucumber and onion). 

Get your satay from Best Satay 7 & 8 which has been serving grilled chicken, beef, and mutton satay since 2002.

When night falls, savour your sticks of satay along Singapore’s largest open-air Satay Street on Tat Street.

2. Thunder Tea Rice & Thunder Spize (Stall 25)

Open daily from 10am to 10pm

Who says hawker food has to be oily, greasy or fried? Head to Stall 25 for a taste of Thunder Tea Rice.

This halal take on traditional Hakka Lei Cha Fan features a bowl of rice topped with a colourful assortment of chopped vegetables and a fragrant green tea soup packed with herby flavours. It’s a nutritious and flavourful meal that’s packed with dietary fibre, vitamins and antioxidants.

It also serves Basil Chicken Rice with Egg and sides such as Hakka-style beancurd. The stall also houses Thunder Spize which sells Japanese- and local-inspired fusion dishes like Spize Katsu Chicken Set, Waa Fiery (spicy Maggi noodles topped with a katsu chicken cutlet), and Lemongrass Chicken.

3. Butter & Cream (Stalls 5-6)

Open daily from 10am to 10pm

Those with a sweet tooth will love Butter & Cream’s array of pastries and cakes, all made with high-quality ingredients and handcrafted with love.

This popular bakery stall’s signature dish is the thick, chunky muffins in flavours like Volcano Cheese, Moonlight Choco Cheese, Bananarama, and Blueberry Bliss. It also sells doffins hnut-muffin fusions), egg tarts and cheesecakes.

4. Nasi Lemak Ayam Taliwang (Stall 71)

Open daily from 10am to 10pm

Take your tastebuds on a culinary journey to Indonesia at Nasi Lemak Ayam Taliwang. This chain has made it into Singapore’s Michelin Bib Gourmand Guide since 2021, bearing the culinary world’s stamp of approval.

Tuck into piping hot fragrant coconut rice, spicy grilled chicken, and a variety of accompaniments like fried anchovies, peanuts and sambal (chilli sauce). You can even swap out the grilled chicken for fried chicken, fish cutlet, or otah otah (spicy fish paste wrapped in banana leaves and grilled or ed), or opt for different sambal varieties.

5. LiXin Teochew Fishball Noodles (Stall 32)

Open daily from 8am to 10pm

One of Singapore’s most popular dishes is fishball noodles. This simple dish is one of the best embodiments of the humble origins of hawker food.

LiXin Teochew Fishball Noodle offers a Michelin Bib Gourmand-approved classic rendition of this beloved dish, featuring springy noodles, flavourful fishballs and a savoury broth. You can opt for a dry version where the springy noodles are tossed with soy sauce, vinegar and chilli sauce, and topped with tender fishballs, fishcakes, and minced pork.

6. Golden Shoe Hokkien Mee (Stall 26)

Open daily from 10am to 10pm

Golden Shoe serves the “wet” version of Hokkien mee that’s particularly gravy-heavy, but it’s so popular amongst diners because the gravy doesn’t feel greasy or oily at all. Instead, flavourful, aromatic noodles are expertly stir-fried to achieve the coveted “wok hei” (smoky flavour), making every bite of this dish so deliciously irresistible. 

Crispy fried pork lard is the perfect garnish, adding some crunch and depth of flavour to each generous serving.

7. Lao Fu Zi Fried Kway Teow (Stalls 74-75)

Open daily from 11.30am to 10pm

For a taste of classic Singaporean char kway teow, head to Lao Fu Zi Fried Kway Teow which has a Michelin Bib Gourmand recommendation. This stall is known for its flavourful and smoky noodles, stir-fried with fresh ingredients using traditional cooking methods. 

Brimming with “wok hei” smokiness, each plate of char kway teow comprises rice noodles, yellow noodles, leafy greens, bean sprouts, prawns, Chinese sausage and egg, topped with fresh cockles.  

8. Warong Pak Sapari (Stall 58)

Open daily from 10am to 10pm

Enjoy more authentic Indonesian flavours at Warong Pak Sapari, another Michelin-recommended stall. 

Helmed by a third generation hawker, it serves a variety of mee soto (noodles in a chicken broth) and mee rebus (noodles in gravy) dishes that are rich and flavourful, generously topped with meat, begedil (fried mashed potato) and green chilli that packs a spicy punch!

9. Munchi Pancakes (Stall TA)

Open daily from 8am to 8pm

Get a taste of traditional Singapore pancakes with a modern twist at Munchi Pancakes. 

Besides the classic peanut and coconut flavours, there are unique flavours like custard, black sesame, Belgian chocolate, matcha, red bean, hazelnut, Biscoff, Oreo cheese, strawberry cheese, cream cheese, blueberry cheese, Earl Grey and Thai milk tea.

TIPS

Best time to visit Lau Pa Sat

Visit during off-peak hours, such as mid-morning or mid-afternoon, to avoid the lunchtime crowds. If you’re trying to grab a seat at Satay Street (which is only set up in the evenings), arrive early (before 8pm) to secure a table.

Lau Pa Sat stalls accept various payment methods, including cash, credit cards, and mobile payment options like PayNow and GrabPay.

Seating

4. Visit Little India’s iconic temples

Uncover the rich history and spiritual significance of Indian culture by visiting the iconic temples in Little India, each brimming with cultural stories and architectural marvels.

A visit to Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple, one of the oldest temples in Singapore, is a must with its intricate architecture and beautiful shrines. Originally known as Soonambu Kambam Kovil or “temple at the village of lime,” it was named after the lime kilns in the area.

In 1908, when daily-rated municipal labourers managed the temple, they imported a statue of the goddess Kali from South India and built the main hall and shrine. By the 1930s, additional significant statues were installed, enhancing its spiritual and architectural richness. Today, it stands as a conserved building, a testament to the enduring legacy of the Indian community in Singapore.

A 10-minute walk from Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple is Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple, known for its stunning tower adorned with colourful statues of Hindu deities. The temple serves as a focal point for the annual Thaipusam festival, drawing devotees and tourists alike to witness its grand processions.

About 20 minutes away, Masjid Abdul Gafoor is another striking example of the rich architectural heritage found among Singapore’s religious sites. This mosque serves as a living monument to the Tamil and Baweanese pioneers whose contributions were vital to the development of colonial Singapore.

As you wander through these sacred sites, learn about the cultural traditions of these temples, including their religious practices and festivals.

5. Immerse in festive celebrations on Deepavali

Every year, during Deepavali, which usually falls between October and November, Little India transforms into a kaleidoscope of light and colour, with elaborate decorations and lights, celebrating the festival of lights. Since 1989, the Deepavali Light-Up has become a key highlight of Singapore’s cultural calendar.

There’s also a spiral staircase (a common feature of Singapore’s pre-war shophouses), which connects the fourth and fifth floors, where you can soak up views of the neighbourhood.

For the best aerial views of the Orchard neighbourhood and the lush Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, nothing beats The Roof Garden which houses the hotel’s 25-metre infinity pool.

The pool is equipped with underwater speakers, no less, to create a truly immersive and sensory experience for swimmers.

If you dare, walk towards the glass-bottomed section of the pool for IG-worthy shots! But be sure to shower before dipping into the pool, and see if you can locate the shower head! Clue: take a closer look at the green walls!

4. A delicious journey through Southeast Asia at Quenino by Victor Liong

Expect a refreshing and playful take on Southeast Asian flavours, conceptualised by Melbourne’s hatted chef Victor Liong and meticulously executed by Chef de Cuisine Sujatha Asokan, at the degustation-only Quenino by Victor Liong on Level 4. 

Taking its name from the Malaccan Creole Portuguese term which means “little one”, Quenino (say “ku-ni-nu”) serves up dishes that marry the diverse flavours and culinary traditions of Southeast Asia with bold creativity, refined techniques and plating artistry. 

From luxurious caviar and sweet, succulent marron from Western Australia to jungle garlic (aka buah kulim) from Borneo, every ingredient is thoughtfully handpicked to captivate the palate of diners.

All menus can be paired with wines or non-alcoholic, single-origin Saicho sparkling teas.

 

Dishes with the wow factor include Indonesian Mud Crab Tart, Scallop, Marron and “Fried Rice”. One of the three Quenino Prelude exquisite bites, Indonesian Mud Crab Tart is topped with caviar, and features the bold and aromatic jungle garlic.

A sophisticated take on Penang’s famous Assam Laksa, Scallop pairs matured oyster muscle with tamarind, ginger flower and clarified Asian tomato essence, topped with julienned slaw in a nod to laksa noodles, and is reimagined as a vibrant salad.  

Marron showcases Western Australia’s prized crayfish, paired with petai coconut cream, sweet green chilli and pomelo from Ipoh, finished with spinach lentil sauce, and served with flatbread. 

 

Inspired by fried rice, nasi ulam and mui fan, the umami-packed “Fried Rice” combines nine elements including tamarind chilli, bottarga, fried betel leaf, cincaluk marinated onions, fried pork lard and ulam rajah, for a unique flavour experience. 

In a class of its own is the popsicle palate cleanser, a whimsical nod to a beloved childhood treat. It is infused with the delicate, floral notes of ginger flower to yield a refreshing bite with a distinctly Southeast Asian twist. 

5. Singapore favourites with a modern flair at Café Quenino

Located next to the lobby, all-day dining Café Quenino is set in a gorgeous light-filled space, thanks to its tall floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook a lush garden. 

The familiar arches, timber ceiling, herringbone timber flooring and ceiling fans are spotted here, complemented with perforated painted arches, mirrored folding screens, rattan cushioned chairs and potted plants.  

For breakfast, savour a myriad of traditional Singapore flavours, elevated with a modern touch. Standouts include the Chilli Crab Omelette, Nasi Lemak Kedgeree, and Rolled Scallion and Egg Pancake. Take a 15-minute boat ride from Changi Point Ferry Terminal to hop aboard this modern kelong (an offshore platform), located right smack in the middle of the sea – an unconventional place that’s unlike your usual zi char (cooked food) stall.

Not only is it Singapore’s first halal-certified kelong restaurant, but diners can also personally catch their fish in the restaurant’s “sure catch” pond. This particular pond is teeming with fleshy fishes like snapper and sea bass. Don’t worry if fishing is new to you as the friendly staff will be on hand to offer assistance to help you secure a fish within minutes.

The restaurant offers several set menus to satisfy your seafood cravings. Its seven-course set menu for five persons features a feast of Lobster – Deep-Fried with Shredded Potatoes, Fish steamed Hong Kong-style, Chilli Crab, Steamed Garlic Scallops, Sambal Mussels, Seasonal Stir-Fried Vegetables, and Lala Beehoon. The price includes a two-way ferry ride.

The nine-course set menu comes with additional delights like Chicken Dried Scallop and Mushroom Soup, Steamed or Salted Egg Prawns, Crispy Chicken with Lemon Sauce, Cereal or Calamari Squid and Seafood Fried Rice.  

3. Le Jardin Singapore

Nestled within Fort Canning, this blooming floral-themed garden café whose name means “the garden” in French boasts a Victorian-style interior decked with hanging ceiling plants and vibrant terrariums. The pet-friendly eatery also offers an alfresco terrace seating for those who prefer to dine under a canopy of trees.

If the naturalistic styling of this place seems familiar to you, that’s because it’s opened by the same team behind Café de Nicole’s Flower, which sports a similar florist-in-cafe concept.

All that might seem gimmicky, and you might be thinking if the food matches up to its theme. Thankfully, Sushi Airways delivers the quality with its wide range of fresh seafood air-flown from Japan every week. 

It also offers a specially curated omakase meal consisting of typically eight to 10 courses comprising seasonal ingredients. The meal includes a wide range of dishes, from appetisers like Raw Eggplant to more substantial dishes like Abalone with Saba Tiny Crab, Unagi, Frozen Ikura, Chawanmushi with Grated Truffle, and Grilled Lobster with Sea Urchin Sauce.
