Discover both old-world charm and modern sophistication in Singapore’s eclectic speakeasy bars, where the city’s exuberant nightlife takes on an air of clandestine elegance. Hidden away behind unassuming facades or through discreet entrances, these bars not only serve drinks, but also invite you on an unforgettable journey to a different time, a surreal place or both.

Besides intriguing decor, speakeasy bars like Ume San 100, The Flying Squirrel and The Secret Mermaid pride themselves on creative and experiential cocktails. Within these quirky establishments, expert mixologists craft elaborate drinks that are both stunning and delicious. Expect classics with a twist, such as a Negroni infused with local herbs or a Martini served with an unexpected, yet delightful garnish. The artistry in the cocktails reflects the passion and creativity of Singapore’s bar scene, making each drink a memorable experience.

One of the best aspects of these hidden gems is the sense of discovery they offer. Finding a speakeasy is often part of the fun – whether it’s through a subtle sign, a secret password or a cryptic clue. This sense of adventure adds an extra layer of excitement to your night out, making each visit feel like you are uncovering a well-kept secret.

We spotlight nine places that offer a sense of adventure that’s sure to add an extra layer of excitement to your night out.

1. Mama Diam and Lou Shang

38 Prinsep Street
www.mamadiamsg.com

Cleverly masquerading behind the facade of a traditional provision shop (“mama shop”), Mama Diam calls out to simpler times, with its old-school trinkets, retro furnishings and nostalgic posters that transport you to yesteryear Singapore. This fusion of past and present creates a unique, immersive dining experience that feels both familiar and refreshingly new, making it a perfect spot for those looking to relive memories or discover the stories of the good old times.

Photo: Mama Diam / Facebook

Take your pick from innovative dishes like King Trumpet Dan Dan Noodles (classic dan dan noodles served with king trumpet mushrooms), Singapore Chilli Soft Shell Crab Bao (Singapore-style chilli crab made with soft shell crabs, sandwiched between buns) and Kaya Churros (Spanish churros with local-style coconut jam) in this suave establishment.

Be sure to savour its curious cocktails that shine the spotlight on nostalgic flavours of Singapore, like Nasi Lemak (fragrant coconut rice dish with various sides), Nanyang Tiramisu (Nanyang cold brew coffee with brandy and chocolate liqueur) and Chai Tarik Brew (whisky and house-pulled chai tea). Mama Diam has many drink promotions, which make trying multiple drinks more affordable.

Continue the party upstairs at Lou Shang, Mama Diam’s sister establishment and whose Chinese name 楼上 literally means “upstairs”. Lou Shang is styled like typical HDB apartment flats and features an equally whimsical food and drinks menu.

Photo: Lou Shang / Facebook

By day, Lou Shang serves many different types of coffee and tea. By night, Lou Shang serves lemon tea-flavoured craft beer, organic wine and Singapore-themed cocktails like Ang Tao Ni, a concoction of bourbon with red beans, coconut cream and gula melaka (palm sugar); Guilty Pleasures, a blend of spiced rum with brown coca and Guinness reduction syrup; and Kopi & Dream, a mix of coffee liqueur with Nanyang-style coffee, butterscotch salted cream and spiced rum.

Foodwise, Lou Shang serves Chilli Crab-tivating, jumbo crab and ricotta ravioli; “Ayam” Satay Lasagna, which comprises vegetable protein and mozzarella bechamel served in satay sauce; Nonya Seafood Laksa, squid ink spaghetti served with tiger prawns in rich laksa soup; and Lou Shang’s delectable Asian-style sandwiches.

One of Singapore’s most iconic heritage buildings in the Central Business District has been refreshed and began a new chapter as QT Singapore, after a stylish overhaul by celebrated Australian interior designer Nic Graham, known for his bold use of colours and playful patterns.

Just a year old, but QT Singapore has already made waves by being the only Singapore hotel on TIME magazine’s World’s Greatest Places list for 2025.

In a former life, the 1927 neo-classical style building which houses the hotel served as the headquarters of the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company. It then became the Cable and Wireless Building, and in 1995, the Telecommunications Authority of Singapore. In 2001, the Ogilvy Centre took over, and in 2014, the building housed SO/ Singapore. Between September 2022 and April 2024, the building was home to Hotel Telegraph, Singapore.

The four-storey curved building on Robinson Road was given conservation status in 2000, preserving its stately stone façade with symmetrical coupled columns, recessed balconies guarded with cast-iron balustrades and semi-circular arch openings.

Mention Changi and most people will immediately think of Changi Airport. However, a short jaunt away lies Changi Village, celebrated for its laid-back vibe, rich historical sites, and scenic beachfront. It’s also a popular spot for hawker food, and the gateway to Pulau Ubin, a rustic island located just off the northeastern corner of Singapore.

We share seven best things to do in and around Changi Village.

1. Discover stories of courage and resilience at Changi Chapel and Museum

The museum tells the personal stories of prisoners of war and civilians interned in Changi prison camp during the Japanese Occupation.

Spread across eight galleries are 114 artefacts, including a never-before-seen 400-page diary, a dinner menu and a toothbrush fashioned from scratch, which shed light on the daily lives of the internees, their responses to the challenges they faced, and their eventual liberation. Step into a re-created Changi Gaol cell where the internees were housed to get a sense of the cramped living confines of the internees.

The Changi Chapel is modelled after St George’s Church, one of the numerous churches built by the prisoners of war in Changi during their internment
Photo: Changi Chapel and Museum

The museum offers a free English guided tour every Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at 11am, while the Mandarin guided tour is conducted on Saturdays and Sundays at 11.30am. The tour lasts about an hour and must be booked in advance online.

There’s also a Temi guided tour, led by an interactive robot, which lets you explore the museum through the eyes of a soldier who was interned at the Changi prison camp.

2. Learn about Changi’s crucial role in Singapore’s defence during WWII at Johore Battery

Go round the bend to Upper Changi Road North and into Cosford Road, and you’ll see Johore Battery looming ahead. It is a full-sized replica built in 2002, based on the main British coastal artillery defence network on the northeastern coast of Singapore.

Built in the late 1930s, Johore Battery was the main artillery battery of the British coastal artillery defence network
Photo: National Library Board

Each gun is positioned 500 metres from each other in a row and has a 16.5-metre-long barrel to target both land and sea objects. The vertical shafts lead to a network of tunnels that are connected to a bunker housing the ammunition.

The battery was named in honour of Johor’s Sultan Ibrahim who had contributed £500,000 for the British war campaign and also as a Silver Jubilee gift for King George V.

3. Soak up scenic views and spot wildlife on Changi Boardwalk

Enjoy a scenic stroll along the coastline on the 2.2-kilometre-long Changi Boardwalk.

There are six distinct sections on the boardwalk: Creek Walk, Beach Walk, Sailing Point Walk, Cliff Walk, Kelong Walk and Sunset Walk.

Catch sunset views during the golden hour from the Changi Boardwalk
Photo: Singapore Tourism Board

The well-lit boardwalk starts from Changi Creek in the east and stretches to the western rocky coast near Changi Beach Club, before finally linking up to Changi Point or Loyang Park Connector at Netheravon Road.

Catch glimpses of boats ferrying people to nearby offshore islands, anchored yachts, and sunset views during the golden hour. Look out for thriving wildlife along the mangrove coasts such as mudskippers, starfish and crabs, and make sure you have a spare memory card for your camera to capture all the wildlife action!

4. Feast on local hawker favourites at Changi Village Hawker Centre

Tuck into a range of local dishes at Changi Village Hawker Centre. A must-eat is nasi lemak (coconut rice served with a variety of side dishes) from International Muslim Food Stall Nasi Lemak (#01-03), known for its fluffy coconut rice and highly raved sambal chilli, or Mizzy Corner Nasi Lemak (#01-23/26), known for its fragrant rice and crispy fried chicken.

Tuck into a variety of local favourites at Changi Village Hawker Centre
Photo: National Heritage Board

Be sure to dig into some sweet and crunchy pisang goreng (fried banana fritters) at Traditional Million Star Fried Banana (#01-35).

Also not to be missed is the chicken hor fun (rice noodles) from Weng Kee Original Taste Ipoh Hor Fun (#01-19), a plate of silky rice noodles, topped with succulent fried chicken and laced with gravy.

5. Enjoy a range of water sports activities at Adventure Paddlers

Fans of water sports can swing by Adventure Paddlers at Ohana Beach House, off Changi Village, to rent equipment like stand-up paddle boards, kayaks and water trikes, and water trampoline for kids for a fun day out at sea.

Rent kayaks from Adventure Paddlers for a fun day out among the mangroves
Photo: Adventure Paddlers

Kayaking enthusiasts can sign up for “A Trail of Nature”, a four-hour eco-tour that will cover a distance of 10km to 22km across Pulau Ubin, along a secured route where very few have ventured. Among the mangroves, be amused by the wildlife and the serenity. Cruise along the waterway and experience the tranquility within untouched surroundings.

6. Take a bumboat from Changi Point Ferry Terminal to Pulau Ubin

For more outdoor fun and adventure, board a bumboat ($4 per person) at Changi Point Ferry Terminal, a stone’s throw from Changi Village Hawker Centre, to the rustic island of Pulau Ubin. Just a 10-minute boat ride away, Pulau Ubin is a popular spot for cycling, kayaking, birdwatching, hiking and camping (a permit is required to set up tents at campsites).

To explore the island on a two wheels, simply pick up a bicycle from the many rental shops dotted near the jetty at Pulau Ubin. Full-day bike rentals starting from $15.

Rent a bicycle from the many rental shops dotted near the jetty to explore Pulau Ubin at your own pace
Photo: Singapore Tourism Board

Hiking fans can hike up Puaka Hill, the highest peak in Pulau Ubin at 74 metres high. It is fairly steep and rocky, with makeshift ropes as railings providing extra support. At the top, soak up sweeping views of Pekan Quarry, Johor Strait and beyond.

Nature lovers must explore the Chek Jawa wetlands, one of Singapore’s richest ecosystems. Enjoy a leisurely stroll along the boardwalk and head up the 20-metre-tall Jejawi Tower for an amazing view of the sea, above the towering tree canopies.

7. Eat your fresh catch at Smith Marine Floating Restaurant

There is no better place to enjoy the freshest seafood than at a kelong (an offshore platform built predominantly with wood). At Smith Marine, Singapore’s first floating kelong dining destination, you can enjoy the ultimate farm-to-table seafood dining experience.

Take a 15-minute bumboat ride from Changi Point Ferry Terminal and catch your own snapper or sea bass at the “sure-catch” pond. You can choose how you’d like your seafood to be cooked and the restaurant will take care of it. The restaurant offers several set menus to satisfy your seafood cravings.

Enjoy the ultimate farm-to-table seafood dining experience at Smith Marine Floating Restaurant
Photo: Smith Marine

Smith Marine was built in 2006 with a focus on breeding sea bass, tiger grouper, flower crab, mussels, lobsters and other live seafood. Besides eating your heart out, you can also take a short walk on the decks to see how the fish is farmed.

Advance booking is required as the restaurant does not accept walk-ins. The restaurant will help to arrange a chartered bumboat from Changi Village Ferry Terminal. The boat ride costs $100 for 12 persons for the two-way trip, and payment is to be made directly to the boatman upon embarkation.

Once an ethnic enclave for the Malay community in the 1800s, Kampung Gelam or Kampong Glam has since evolved to become a vibrant hub of youth culture and gastronomic wonders today. Forget the usual tourist traps – here’s where age-old traditions and trendy vibes collide, and there’s no better place to experience this than at the food spots on Haji Lane and Arab Street.

Haji Lane
Photo: Singapore Tourism Board

For those wondering, “Is Haji Lane the same as Arab Street?” The answer is: Nope! Arab Street is a broader, bustling thoroughfare, while Haji Lane is its narrow, quirky, and incredibly photogenic neighbour. Both, however, form the heart of Kampong Glam’s vibrant culture and delicious food scene.

Arab Street
Photo: Singapore Tourism Board

Best time to visit Lau Pa Sat

Visit during off-peak hours, such as mid-morning or mid-afternoon, to avoid the lunchtime crowds. If you’re trying to grab a seat at Satay Street (which is only set up in the evenings), arrive early (before 8pm) to secure a table.

Payment methods

Lau Pa Sat stalls accept various payment methods, including cash, credit cards, and mobile payment options like PayNow and GrabPay.

Seating

Lau Pa Sat offers both indoor and outdoor seating options. The indoor seating provides a more air-conditioned and comfortable environment, while the outdoor seating offers a lively atmosphere, especially in the evenings.

Etiquette

Tray return kiosks are available around the hawker centre, so be mindful of food waste and dispose of your trash responsibly. If you’re ordering your food to-go, you can bring your own reusable containers, water bottles and utensils to reduce waste.

Your visit to Singapore isn’t complete if you haven’t explored Little India, one of Singapore’s most colourful ethnic enclaves. The bustling streets of Little India are filled with traditional eateries, vibrant markets, iconic temples and hidden gems that truly reflect Indian culture.

From indulging in delicious street food to exploring unique shops, here are six ways to experience the rich culture of Little India.

1. Dive into the past at Indian Heritage Centre

Step into the Indian Heritage Centre (IHC), where history comes alive in the heart of Little India.

Not your average museum, the IHC serves as a vibrant cultural hub within the Singapore National Heritage Board’s museum family. It’s a place where the past meets the present through a dynamic calendar of performances, workshops, symposiums, masterclasses, and festive events that celebrate the Indian community in Singapore.

Photo: Singapore Tourism Board

As you explore IHC’s five permanent galleries, you’ll uncover a treasure trove of artefacts and stories that spotlight the Indian community’s rich history. From ceremonial gold to rubies and textiles, the IHC displays an array of personal and communal treasures.

Enhance your visit with virtual guides and interactive gameplay that make history come alive and relevant. These engaging features are designed to deepen your understanding of the exhibits, while ongoing research initiatives promise the thrill of new discoveries and stories with each visit.

Alternatively, join a free guided tour led by knowledgeable docents who provide insights into the scholarly research and personal stories behind the exhibits. Starting from the 1st-century interactions, these 60-minute tours offer a comprehensive exploration of the Indian legacy in Singapore. For those visiting in groups, the IHC can accommodate up to 20 guests per tour.

2. Discover Indian cuisine at Little India’s traditional eateries

Ready to tickle your taste buds? Embark on a gastronomic adventure through the heart of Little India, where the tantalising aroma of authentic Indian cuisine and aromatic spices fill the streets and beckon food lovers from all walks of life.

As you meander through the streets, the fusion of flavours from different regions of India fills the air, inviting you to sample a delectable array of Indian street food.

Whether you’re a fan of vegetarian dishes or a connoisseur of succulent meats and seafood, explore the countless eateries and choose from a wide range of vegetarian, meat, and seafood dishes.

Biryani is a dish of basmati rice flavoured with fragrant spices layered over tender and succulent pieces of meat
Photo: @eatinginberlin/Instagram

A must-try is the iconic biryani, a flavourful rice dish that’s a staple in Indian cuisine. It’s traditionally made by layering basmati rice with marinated meats like chicken, mutton, lamb, beef, prawn or fish, all infused with a variety of fragrant spices. Vegetarian versions are equally popular, featuring hearty vegetables and sometimes paneer (Indian cottage cheese) as substitutes for meat.

As you explore, make sure to drop by some of the famous Indian eateries and cafes here such as Mr Biryani, Madras New Woodlands, and The Banana Leaf Apolo, for an experience wrapped in tradition so much so that it will transport your senses to the heart of South India.

3. Explore Little India’s vibrant shops and markets

Venture into the colourful markets and stores where you will find a variety of traditional Indian clothing, aromatic spices, unique trinkets and more. As you walk down the bustling streets, spot the vibrant displays of traditional Indian clothing, with mannequins draped in elegant sarees and sparkling accessories. The elegance of sarees, the shimmer of bangles, and the rich colours of tunics, plus the symphony of Kollywood or Bollywood beats and spiritual music emanating from the CD shops, create a lively backdrop.

You’ll definitely come across stalls that sell jasmine flowers crafted into floral wreaths. These fragrant decorations are not only beautiful but also hold cultural significance, often used in weddings, religious ceremonies, and as offerings in temples.

A must-visit is Tekka Market, a bustling wet market along Buffalo Road, known for its array of fresh produce and affordable goods. The first floor is a foodie’s delight, featuring a food centre where you can indulge in everything from aromatic biryani to thosai (thin, crispy pancake). The other half of the first floor houses the wet market section, where locals shop for their daily meats, seafood and more at competitive prices.

Photo: Danny Santos

If you’re in the mood for some serious shopping, head up to the second floor where you’ll find an array of traditional Indian costumes. It’s a haggler’s paradise – be prepared to negotiate to snag the best deals. Hidden among these stalls, tucked away in random corners are tailors, surrounded by piles of fabric for custom-made garments.

For those who love a good find, make Serangoon Road your next stop. Discover a myriad of textiles and accessories that complete a traditional Indian outfit at the shops along the roads. And if your shopping list extends beyond fabric, head to the 24-hour Mustafa Centre, a shopping mall along Syed Alwi Road that offers an extensive range of products – from cosmetics, fragrances and gold jewellery to luggage, electronic items and clothing at affordable prices.

4. Visit Little India’s iconic temples

Uncover the rich history and spiritual significance of Indian culture by visiting the iconic temples in Little India, each brimming with cultural stories and architectural marvels.

A visit to Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple, one of the oldest temples in Singapore, is a must with its intricate architecture and beautiful shrines. Originally known as Soonambu Kambam Kovil or “temple at the village of lime,” it was named after the lime kilns in the area.

In 1908, when daily-rated municipal labourers managed the temple, they imported a statue of the goddess Kali from South India and built the main hall and shrine. By the 1930s, additional significant statues were installed, enhancing its spiritual and architectural richness. Today, it stands as a conserved building, a testament to the enduring legacy of the Indian community in Singapore.

Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple
Photo: Singapore Tourism Board

A 10-minute walk from Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple is Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple, known for its stunning tower adorned with colourful statues of Hindu deities. The temple serves as a focal point for the annual Thaipusam festival, drawing devotees and tourists alike to witness its grand processions.

About 20 minutes away, Masjid Abdul Gafoor is another striking example of the rich architectural heritage found among Singapore’s religious sites. This mosque serves as a living monument to the Tamil and Baweanese pioneers whose contributions were vital to the development of colonial Singapore.

As you wander through these sacred sites, learn about the cultural traditions of these temples, including their religious practices and festivals.

5. Immerse in festive celebrations on Deepavali

Every year, during Deepavali, which usually falls between October and November, Little India transforms into a kaleidoscope of light and colour, with elaborate decorations and lights, celebrating the festival of lights. Since 1989, the Deepavali Light-Up has become a key highlight of Singapore’s cultural calendar.

In 2024, the streets were ablaze with vibrant colours, lighting up more than 2km of the district with a festive brilliance that could light up the night sky.

Photo: Indian Heritage Centre

Lights and decorations aside, this festival also brings with it a flurry of activities. Sample festive flavours through a variety of traditional dishes and sweets at the food bazaar. Right in the heart of this bustling festival is the Deepavali Festival Village along Campbell Lane. This bustling marketplace will be filled with stalls selling traditional Indian clothing, snacks, intricate handicrafts, and festive decorations at a bargain.

6. Try henna art

For a more immersive cultural experience, try henna art, a traditional Indian body art form.

Also known as mehndi, henna is a form of body art from ancient India, where intricate designs are created on a person’s skin using a paste made from the henna plant. It is most commonly associated with weddings and is an essential part of bridal preparations in Indian culture. It is believed to relieve the bride of any stress before her big day and is also thought to bring good fortune and blessings to the bride and groom. Apart from its cultural significance, henna art is also a popular choice for tourists seeking a one-of-a-kind souvenir.

Photo: Singapore Tourism Board

There are several stalls and shops in Little India that offer henna services, each with its unique style of designs. From classic floral motifs to modern designs that twist up the arm in stunning spirals, swing by one of the bustling henna stalls and let the artists work their magic.

A country’s best luxury hotels are often destinations in and of themselves, offering guests much more than a five-star experience.

Just steps away from Singapore’s famous shopping street of Orchard Road is Artyzen Singapore, a visually spectacular luxury hotel which celebrates the Lion City and the elements that make the city-state so captivating.

Arguably the most striking property along Cuscaden Road, the terracotta-hued hotel pays homage to Singapore’s culture, heritage, colours, flavours, garden city reputation as well as its own tropical garden villa past. The hotel grounds were once home to Villa Marie, a 1940s colonial-style bungalow owned by Singaporean botanist and avid orchid cultivator Tan Hoon Siang, the great-grandson of well-known philanthropist Tan Tock Seng.

Drawing inspiration from Villa Marie’s unique botanical and architectural heritage, acclaimed Singapore-based architecture firm ONG&ONG designed the 21-storey hotel as a towering oasis featuring vertically stacked sky villas interspersed with sky gardens on alternating floors.

Inside the 142-room hotel, award-winning Australian interior design studio Nic Graham & Associates reinterprets Singapore’s rich cultural heritage and Villa Marie’s roots through a host of bold and colourful elements including arches, barrel-vaulted ceilings, Peranakan tiles, botanical wallpaper and orchid motifs.

Personalised services are expected at luxury hotels, but Artyzen Singapore goes a step further with its complimentary Courtesy Car service, available between 8am and 8pm daily. The drop-off service covers any destination within a 1.5-km radius of the hotel, which would include popular spots like ION Orchard, TANGS, Paragon, Takashimaya, Apple Orchard Road, Singapore Botanic Gardens and Dempsey Hill.

We highlight five reasons why Artyzen Singapore should be on the radar of luxury travellers looking for a different kind of wow.

1. Enlivened spaces that celebrate Singapore’s culture and heritage

Every space of the hotel is a stylish nod to Singapore’s vibrant culture and rich heritage. At the lobby lounge, tall arches and orchid wallpaper stand out as well as an interwoven rope textured wall art in between the lifts that allude to Singapore’s port-city past.

Step into one of the three lifts and get set for an artistic experience like no other. Each lift features a super Instagrammable backlit backdrop of Singapore’s heritage shophouses, created by local artist Terence Tan.

Timeless Peranakan 1 lift artwork by Singapore artist Terence Tan

On floors with guestrooms, elegant ceramics and decor pieces adorn shelves facing the lifts, while corridors are lined with carpets bearing orchid motifs, flanked by wall panels with rattan-like patterns.

Over on Level 5, the hotel’s Wellness and Workout space which houses its spa and 24-hour Technogym-equipped fitness centre, is an Orchid Library where a small collection of moth orchids and other orchid species are showcased amidst lush foliage where plants like Monstera and Rattlesnake Fern thrive.

Spa reception on Level 5

There are also two yoga pavilions facing a vertical green wall where high-intensity interval training, yoga, mat Pilates, restorative sound meditation, and other wellness classes are conducted.

Keep your eyes peeled for intriguing art pieces, including one which mimics water and another that offers a visual representation of wellness. There’s also a spiral staircase (a common feature of Singapore’s pre-war shophouses), which connects the fourth and fifth floors, where you can soak up views of the neighbourhood.

2. Plush, spacious rooms & suites with a tropical charm

One of the first things you’ll notice as you step into your Deluxe Balcony, Premier Balcony or Grand Terrace Room is the soaring 4-metre timber ceiling and the ceiling fan, a rarity in hotels. Terrace Suites boast barrel-vaulted timber ceilings, adding to the grandeur of the space.

Deluxe Balcony King Bedroom

Another rarity is balconies in every room, plus bathtubs in all bathrooms except in rooms with twin beds.

Rooms are decked in herringbone timber flooring, Peranakan porcelain plates, floral motif carpets, colourful cushions, brass light fixtures, black-rimmed archways and headboards featuring heritage shophouses.

Terrace Suite Bedroom

Bathrooms sport grey herringbone tiles, cream textured orchid wallpaper and marble surfaces, and are stocked with toiletries from Heeley Parfums Paris that come in eco-friendly aluminium bottles.

For a caffeine boost, insert a Nespresso capsule and hit the button on the Nespresso machine or enjoy a cup of Bacha coffee, while tea drinkers can brew their favourite tea from The 1872 Clipper Tea Co.

3. Spectacular sky-high views, tipples & floating pool at The Roof Garden

For the best aerial views of the Orchard neighbourhood and the lush Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, nothing beats The Roof Garden which houses the hotel’s 25-metre infinity pool.

Eating has been known as one of Singapore’s national pastimes, and it’s pretty clear why. Besides well-loved traditional hawker food, the country is also blessed with a myriad of unique restaurants including those that offer extraordinary dining experiences worth going the extra mile for.

Why stick to the usual spots when you can choose to dine in an aircraft-themed space or a modern kelong floating between Pulau Ubin and Changi Point Ferry Terminal?

We shine the spotlight on eight restaurants with cool concepts for your next unforgettable meal!

1. Gardenasia

240 Neo Tiew Crescent

Far from the city centre lies a hidden gem: Gardenasia. Located in a secluded spot in the Kranji countryside, this expansive space is a farm stay and event venue all-in-one. Besides the villas, there’s a quaint and comfy bistro tucked amidst all that lush greenery, the perfect spot for those looking for respite from café crowds in the urban jungle.

What sets this bistro apart is how it creates dishes using local ingredients grown in the surrounding farms. Yes, that means you get the authentic farm-to-table experience!

Photo: Gardenasia

Expect classic Western dishes like Traditional Fish and Chips and Pan-Seared Fish Fillet, prepared using fresh catches of the day including red snapper and sea bass.

Those who prefer local dishes can tuck into local delights like Grilled Ribeye Hor Fun, Hokkien Mee Pasta and Farm Fresh Fish Soup. For light bites, order comforting nibbles such as Mozzarella Cheese Sticks, Popcorn Chicken with Salsa and Prawn Fritters with Wasabi Mayonnaise.

2. Smith Marine Floating Restaurant

95B Pulau Ubin FC97E Pulau Ubin Coastal Area 508325

Fancy reeling in fish and devouring them on the same day? Smith Marine Floating Restaurant is where you can eat your fresh catch!

Take a 15-minute boat ride from Changi Point Ferry Terminal to hop aboard this modern kelong (an offshore platform), located right smack in the middle of the sea – an unconventional place that’s unlike your usual zi char (cooked food) stall.

Photo: Smith Marine Floating Restaurant

Not only is it Singapore’s first halal-certified kelong restaurant, but diners can also personally catch their fish in the restaurant’s “sure catch” pond. This particular pond is teeming with fleshy fishes like snapper and sea bass. Don’t worry if fishing is new to you as the friendly staff will be on hand to offer assistance to help you secure a fish within minutes.

The restaurant offers several set menus to satisfy your seafood cravings. Its seven-course set menu for five persons features a feast of Lobster – Deep-Fried with Shredded Potatoes, Fish steamed Hong Kong-style, Chilli Crab, Steamed Garlic Scallops, Sambal Mussels, Seasonal Stir-Fried Vegetables, and Lala Beehoon. The price includes a two-way ferry ride.

Steamed Prawns
Photo: Smith Marine Floating Restaurant

The nine-course set menu comes with additional delights like Chicken Dried Scallop and Mushroom Soup, Steamed or Salted Egg Prawns, Crispy Chicken with Lemon Sauce, Cereal or Calamari Squid and Seafood Fried Rice.

3. Le Jardin Singapore

5 Cox Terrace, Level 2, Fort Canning Arts Centre

Nestled within Fort Canning, this blooming floral-themed garden café whose name means “the garden” in French boasts a Victorian-style interior decked with hanging ceiling plants and vibrant terrariums. The pet-friendly eatery also offers an alfresco terrace seating for those who prefer to dine under a canopy of trees.

Photo: Le Jardin Singapore

If the naturalistic styling of this place seems familiar to you, that’s because it’s opened by the same team behind Café de Nicole’s Flower, which sports a similar florist-in-cafe concept.

Strawberry Belgian Waffles
Photo: Le Jardin Singapore

Food-wise, go for breakfast and brunch house specialities like Rosti and Big Breakfast, or mains like Le Jardin’s Wagyu Burger, Singapore Chilli Crab Linguine for lunch and dinner.

Satisfy your sweet cravings with the scrumptious Chocolate Hazelnut or Strawberry Belgian Waffles or Basque Cheesecake.

4. Sushi Airways

20A Baghdad Street

This dining destination replicates a flight to Japan, with an interior that looks very much like an aeroplane cabin with its stainless steel stairs, compartments and meal carts. Even the windows are shaped like the ones in an aircraft! To top it all, service staff are also dressed in uniforms befitting air stewards and stewardesses.

Photo: Sushi Airways

All that might seem gimmicky, and you might be thinking if the food matches up to its theme. Thankfully, Sushi Airways delivers the quality with its wide range of fresh seafood air-flown from Japan every week.

It also offers a specially curated omakase meal consisting of typically eight to 10 courses comprising seasonal ingredients. The meal includes a wide range of dishes, from appetisers like Raw Eggplant to more substantial dishes like Abalone with Saba Tiny Crab, Unagi, Frozen Ikura, Chawanmushi with Grated Truffle, and Grilled Lobster with Sea Urchin Sauce.

Nestled in the north-eastern part of Singapore, the Seletar neighbourhood is pretty much under the radar and known for its rustic allure.

Considered one of Singapore’s best-kept secrets, Seletar is where you can enjoy nature and an array of fun outdoor activities. It has cycling routes, wetlands, cosy cafes, swanky eateries and more.

Not too far away is Seletar Island, a tranquil yet undiscovered island located off the northern coastal region of Singapore. Before redevelopment plans were put in place, Seletar Island was originally the home of rubber plantations

and even a military airbase for the British way back in the 1920s, just before World War II.

It is also home to Seletar Airport, Singapore’s second airport serving commercial flights. Spanning over 160ha, the airport mostly serves smaller-sized private and business jet airlines and aircraft today.

For a little adventure up north, make your way to Seletar. We’ve rounded up seven best things to do at this hidden gem.

1. Lower Seletar Reservoir

Lower Seletar Reservoir is the perfect spot to get a proper dose of nature. Spend a day leisurely paddling a kayak at the Lower Seletar Water Sports Centre (LSWSC), or cast your rods at the fishing jetty for a chance to catch large snakeheads and tilapias.

A single kayak costs $7 for an hour with a minimum of two hours required, while a double kayak is priced at $24 for two hours. Get more information and make your bookings at LSWSC here! Do note that the fishing jetty is currently targeted towards hobbyists, so you’ll be expected to bring your own equipment and bait.

Photo: Camelot Pte Ltd

Alternatively, take a short stroll down the boardwalk at Rower’s Bay Park (found within the reservoir). This is one of the popular places to cycle in Singapore, sporting a 60km cycling track that belongs to the first phase of the Round Island Route (RIR). While you’re there, do keep an eye out for wildlife creatures like Grey Herons, Dragonflies or Copper-cheeked frogs. Be sure to follow general park safety rules like maintaining your distance and refraining from feeding the animals for your own safety, and have all the cycling gear you need for a comfortable ride.

For those looking to unwind and chill out, head down to The Heritage Bridge instead. Built to resemble old-fashioned kelongs (traditional offshore platforms) on stilts, it’s the ideal place to bask in the sun, enjoy a picnic or soak up captivating sunset views.

2. Seletar Fishing Village

Located near Lower Seletar Reservoir and Yishun Dam, Seletar Fishing Village is a hidden spot that may look shabby at first glance, until you take the time to explore it.

This is Singapore’s last fishing village, a well-kept secret and one of Seletar’s most interesting spots – like a time capsule from the past! Pay a visit and you’ll soon notice how time flows much slower there.

Photo: @picsque_andychong / Instagram

The place is known to be the most charming when the tide is low, especially during the golden hour. In the evenings, you’re likely to find photographers walking down to the swamp area. With the stunning view of the setting sun, topped with barren trees in the foreground, pictures taken at Seletar Fishing Village often look as though they were shot from a different era (or country).

Have your monopod ready when you’re here, and if you have a film camera, the rustic prints will definitely be worthwhile. You’ll also find kampung huts and a wooden jetty called Jenal Jetty there. These are used by a small pool of local fishermen, but note that they’re out of bounds to the public.

3. Hampstead Wetlands Park

Another green sanctuary for rest and recreation is Hampstead Wetlands Park, located right in the middle of Seletar Aerospace Park. Featuring boardwalks and a nature trail, this 3.23ha wetlands is home to a variety of wildlife that inhabit the freshwater ecosystems.

From the viewing decks, you might spot butterflies, dragonflies, and even a wide variety of birds like the White-throated Kingfishers foraging for food. It’s also one of the best places to cycle in Singapore, thanks to its scenic routes.

Photo: Xperience DMC Private Limited

With the wide diversity of flora and fauna, it’s no wonder that photographers and animal-lovers are often found at Hampstead Wetlands Park. Best of all, the park’s rather convenient to get to – it’s only a 30-minute bus ride away from Sengkang MRT.

4. The Oval at Seletar Aerospace Park

For some aviation-themed fun, head to The Oval at Seletar Aerospace Park, a refurbished colonial site that’s now an enclave for food and family adventures.

With no tall buildings around The Oval, it feels like you’re in the countryside. Instead of skyscrapers, you’ll find a slew of wide open fields and unique playgrounds there – anything from tables of aeroplane ludo to a propeller plane and slides with aviation motifs for the little ones to play at.

Aside from these activities, The Oval also provides an opportunity for some sightseeing and exploration of history. Colonial black and white houses can also be found at Hyde Park Gate. These bungalows were once used by the British Royal Air Force in Singapore.

Chicken rice is one of Singapore’s most treasured dishes. The iconic dish can be found at most food courts, hawker centres and even fancy restaurants offering local specialities.

At first glance, chicken rice looks deceptively simple to make, but in reality, it is difficult to execute well as there are several components to the dish. For example, is the rice fragrant and pillowy enough after simmering in chicken stock? Is the chicken tender and flavourful? Is the chilli garlicky, punchy and tangy, and the grated ginger dip salted just right? Is the soup flavoursome?

So where to go for the best chicken rice in Singapore? Read on.

1. Chatterbox

#05-03 Hilton Singapore Orchard
Chatterbox Express – Terminal 1, Departure/Transit Lounge East, #02-52, Changi Airport

Established in 1971, Chatterbox gained fame for elevating the humble Hainanese chicken rice into a gourmet dining experience at a five-star hotel.

Over the years, Chatterbox became synonymous with tender chicken, aromatic rice and flavourful sauces.

Photo: Chatterbox

Chatterbox’s Mandarin Chicken Rice features free-range chicken, carefully poached to achieve the perfect tenderness. Its succulent chicken is accompanied by fragrant rice infused with chicken fat and pandan leaves, and is served with its signature chilli sauce, ginger paste and dark soy sauce.

The restaurant also offers other local favourites like Lobster Laksa, Beef Hor Fun, Chatterbox Rojak, Seafood Hokkien Mee and Grilled Satay.

In October, Chatterbox opened Chatterbox Express at Changi Airport’s Terminal 1 transit area. Before your next flight out at Terminal 1, stop by to enjoy its beloved Mandarin Chicken Rice, and favourites like Signature Laksa, Singapore Curry Chicken and Kaya Butter Toast.

2. Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice

Stall No. 10 & 11, Maxwell Food Centre

Ask anyone working in the vicinity of Maxwell Food Centre and they can confirm that there’s always a never-ending queue at the stall.

Fans include Gordon Ramsay and the late Anthony Bourdain who remarked that the “chicken rice is so fragrant and delicious that it can be eaten on its own”.

Photo: Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice

Tian Tian’s chicken rice is delectably rich in flavour, while its fresh steamed chicken meat may even win over those who prefer roast chicken.

3. Ah Tai Hainanese Chicken Rice

Stall No. 7, Maxwell Food Centre

If the queue at Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice is too long for you, head to Ah Tai Hainanese Chicken Rice, just two stalls away. The stall is manned by Tian Tian’s former head cook Wong Liang Tai, and some say his offerings are even better than his former employer’s.

Photo: @roland_of_the_lowlands / Instagram

The competition between Ah Tai and Tian Tian has added an interesting dynamic to Maxwell Food Centre, with patrons often comparing the two stalls. This rivalry has further cemented both stalls’ reputations, drawing more attention and crowds who are eager to taste and judge the standards of the respective chicken rice for themselves.

4. Boon Tong Kee

399, 401 & 403 Balestier Road

Boon Tong Kee has been serving chicken rice since 1979. Known for its silky-smooth chicken and consistently high-quality rice, Boon Tong Kee offers a slightly more refined dining experience.

Its chicken rice is served with a deliciously thick and rich dark soy sauce, a nostalgic touch for those who grew up eating the dish.

Photo: Boon Tong Kee

Boon Tong Kee has seven outlets across Singapore. If you’re looking for a grand night out, head over to its swanky Compass One and Vista Exchange Green restaurants. If you want a Hong Kong-style outdoor seating experience, dine at its Ang Mo Kio outlet.

At its restaurants, you can also purchase its factory-packed sauces like dark soya sauce, XO sauce, ginger paste and chilli sauce.

5. Five Star Hainanese Chicken Rice

191 East Coast Road

Following a healthy diet? Five Star Hainanese Chicken Rice may be your healthier choice when you want to indulge in some chicken rice.

Established in the early 1980s by Lee Tai Keng, Five Star’s chicken rice is made with high-quality ingredients like kampung chicken, which is leaner and less fatty than regular chicken, using traditional cooking methods.

Photo: Five Star Hainanese Chicken Rice

The preparation of Five Star’s chicken is meticulous – the birds are poached at precise temperatures to ensure the meat remains tender and juicy. This method also helps to retain the natural flavours and moisture of the chicken.

Five Star currently has three outlets across Singapore.

6. Ming Kee Chicken Rice

Blk 511 Bishan Street 13, #01-522 Kim San Leng coffee shop

Ming Kee Chicken Rice was founded by Madam Yeong, who learned the art of making chicken rice from her father, a Hainanese chef.

It has garnered a reputation for serving tender chicken that has been chilled in an ice bath. The cooking process ensures that the meat retains its natural flavours. The chicken is poached in a meticulously seasoned broth, which is then chilled to firm up the skin and lock in the juices.

Photo: @riseandthrive_dream / Instagram

Remarkably, Ming Kee’s quality has been consistent and its prices have also remained affordable over the years.

These days, Madam Yeong runs the stall with her daughter and granddaughter, making it a three-generation business that will, no doubt, continue to thrive in the years to come.

7. Chin Chin Eating House

19 Purvis Street

One of Singapore’s oldest restaurants, Chin Chin Eating House has been serving chicken rice since 1934.

Photo: @khush.chopra / Instagram

Its chicken is prepared according to traditional Hainanese methods, which involve poaching the entire chicken at sub-boiling temperatures. The stock is then skimmed off and some of the fat and liquid, along with ginger, garlic and pandan leaves are used in the cooking of the rice, producing an oily, flavourful rice (aka “oily rice”).

Chin Chin is also known for its Hainanese dishes like Pork Chop and Prawn Roll.

8. Yishun 925 Chicken Rice

925 Yishun Central #01-249

Don’t let its simple and unpretentious name detract you from its fragrant chicken rice.

Photo: @riomilan2 / Instagram

Founded in the early 1990s, Yishun 925 only offers steamed chicken. The chicken is served in a shallow pool of robust gravy that has a savoury, earthy flavour which complements the tender meat and tangy achar perfectly.

It has three locations in the heartlands of Yishun, Ang Mo Kio and Jurong.

9. Katong Mei Wei Chicken Rice
