Discover both old-world charm and modern sophistication in Singapore’s eclectic speakeasy bars, where the city’s exuberant nightlife takes on an air of clandestine elegance. Hidden away behind unassuming facades or through discreet entrances, these bars not only serve drinks, but also invite you on an unforgettable journey to a different time, a surreal place or both.

Besides intriguing decor, speakeasy bars like Ume San 100, The Flying Squirrel and The Secret Mermaid pride themselves on creative and experiential cocktails.
One of Singapore’s most iconic heritage buildings in the Central Business District has been refreshed and began a new chapter as QT Singapore, after a stylish overhaul by celebrated Australian interior designer Nic Graham, known for his bold use of colours and playful patterns.

The 134-room hotel is the first Southeast Asian outpost for award-winning designer hotel collection QT Hotels & Resorts, which is part of EVT Hotels & Resorts.

Just a year old, but QT Singapore has already made waves by being the only Singapore hotel on TIME magazine’s World’s Greatest Places list for 2025.

In a former life, the 1927 neo-classical style building which houses the hotel served as the headquarters of the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company. It then became the Cable and Wireless Building, and in 1995, the Telecommunications Authority of Singapore. In 2001, the Ogilvy Centre took over, and in 2014, the building housed SO/ Singapore. Between September 2022 and April 2024, the building was home to Hotel Telegraph, Singapore.

The four-storey curved building on Robinson Road was given conservation status in 2000, preserving its stately stone façade with symmetrical coupled columns, recessed balconies guarded with cast-iron balustrades and semi-circular arch openings.

Mention Changi and most people will immediately think of Changi Airport. However, a short jaunt away lies Changi Village, celebrated for its laid-back vibe, rich historical sites, and scenic beachfront. It’s also a popular spot for hawker food, and the gateway to Pulau Ubin, a rustic island located just off the northeastern corner of Singapore.

We share seven best things to do in and around Changi Village.

1. Discover stories of courage and resilience at Changi Chapel and Museum

The museum tells the personal stories of prisoners of war and civilians interned in Changi prison camp during the Japanese Occupation.

Spread across eight galleries are 114 artefacts, including a never-before-seen 400-page diary, a dinner menu and a toothbrush fashioned from scratch, which shed light on the daily lives of the internees, their responses to the challenges they faced, and their eventual liberation. Step into a re-created Changi Gaol cell where the internees were housed to get a sense of the cramped living confines of the internees.

The Changi Chapel is modelled after St George’s Church, one of the numerous churches built by the prisoners of war in Changi during their internment
Photo: Changi Chapel and Museum

The museum offers a free English guided tour every Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at 11am, while the Mandarin guided tour is conducted on Saturdays and Sundays at 11.30am. The tour lasts about an hour and must be booked in advance online.

There’s also a Temi guided tour, led by an interactive robot, which lets you explore the museum through the eyes of a soldier who was interned at the Changi prison camp.

2. Learn about Changi’s crucial role in Singapore’s defence during WWII at Johore Battery

Go round the bend to Upper Changi Road North and into Cosford Road, and you’ll see Johore Battery looming ahead. It is a full-sized replica built in 2002, based on the main British coastal artillery defence network on the northeastern coast of Singapore.

Built in the late 1930s, Johore Battery was the main artillery battery of the British coastal artillery defence network
Photo: National Library Board

Each gun is positioned 500 metres from each other in a row and has a 16.5-metre-long barrel to target both land and sea objects. The vertical shafts lead to a network of tunnels that are connected to a bunker housing the ammunition.

The battery was named in honour of Johor’s Sultan Ibrahim who had contributed £500,000 for the British war campaign and also as a Silver Jubilee gift for King George V.

3. Soak up scenic views and spot wildlife on Changi Boardwalk

Enjoy a scenic stroll along the coastline on the 2.2-kilometre-long Changi Boardwalk.

There are six distinct sections on the boardwalk: Creek Walk, Beach Walk, Sailing Point Walk, Cliff Walk, Kelong Walk and Sunset Walk.

Catch sunset views during the golden hour from the Changi Boardwalk
Photo: Singapore Tourism Board

The well-lit boardwalk starts from Changi Creek in the east and stretches to the western rocky coast near Changi Beach Club, before finally linking up to Changi Point or Loyang Park Connector at Netheravon Road.

Catch glimpses of boats ferrying people to nearby offshore islands, anchored yachts, and sunset views during the golden hour. Look out for thriving wildlife along the mangrove coasts such as mudskippers, starfish and crabs, and make sure you have a spare memory card for your camera to capture all the wildlife action!

4. Feast on local hawker favourites at Changi Village Hawker Centre

Tuck into a range of local dishes at Changi Village Hawker Centre. A must-eat is nasi lemak (coconut rice served with a variety of side dishes) from International Muslim Food Stall Nasi Lemak (#01-03), known for its fluffy coconut rice and highly raved sambal chilli, or Mizzy Corner Nasi Lemak (#01-23/26), known for its fragrant rice and crispy fried chicken.

Tuck into a variety of local favourites at Changi Village Hawker Centre
Photo: National Heritage Board

Be sure to dig into some sweet and crunchy pisang goreng (fried banana fritters) at Traditional Million Star Fried Banana (#01-35).

Also not to be missed is the chicken hor fun (rice noodles) from Weng Kee Original Taste Ipoh Hor Fun (#01-19), a plate of silky rice noodles, topped with succulent fried chicken and laced with gravy.

5. Enjoy a range of water sports activities at Adventure Paddlers

Fans of water sports can swing by Adventure Paddlers at Ohana Beach House, off Changi Village, to rent equipment like stand-up paddle boards, kayaks and water trikes, and water trampoline for kids for a fun day out at sea.

Rent kayaks from Adventure Paddlers for a fun day out among the mangroves
Photo: Adventure Paddlers

Kayaking enthusiasts can sign up for “A Trail of Nature”, a four-hour eco-tour that will cover a distance of 10km to 22km across Pulau Ubin, along a secured route where very few have ventured. Among the mangroves, be amused by the wildlife and the serenity. Cruise along the waterway and experience the tranquility within untouched surroundings.

6. Take a bumboat from Changi Point Ferry Terminal to Pulau Ubin

For more outdoor fun and adventure, board a bumboat ($4 per person) at Changi Point Ferry Terminal, a stone’s throw from Changi Village Hawker Centre, to the rustic island of Pulau Ubin. Just a 10-minute boat ride away, Pulau Ubin is a popular spot for cycling, kayaking, birdwatching, hiking and camping (a permit is required to set up tents at campsites).

To explore the island on a two wheels, simply pick up a bicycle from the many rental shops dotted near the jetty at Pulau Ubin. Full-day bike rentals starting from $15.

Rent a bicycle from the many rental shops dotted near the jetty to explore Pulau Ubin at your own pace
Photo: Singapore Tourism Board

Hiking fans can hike up Puaka Hill, the highest peak in Pulau Ubin at 74 metres high. It is fairly steep and rocky, with makeshift ropes as railings providing extra support. At the top, soak up sweeping views of Pekan Quarry, Johor Strait and beyond.

Nature lovers must explore the Chek Jawa wetlands, one of Singapore’s richest ecosystems. Enjoy a leisurely stroll along the boardwalk and head up the 20-metre-tall Jejawi Tower for an amazing view of the sea, above the towering tree canopies.

7. Eat your fresh catch at Smith Marine Floating Restaurant

There is no better place to enjoy the freshest seafood than at a kelong (an offshore platform built predominantly with wood). At Smith Marine, Singapore’s first floating kelong dining destination, you can enjoy the ultimate farm-to-table seafood dining experience.

Take a 15-minute bumboat ride from Changi Point Ferry Terminal and catch your own snapper or sea bass at the “sure-catch” pond. You can choose how you’d like your seafood to be cooked and the restaurant will take care of it. The restaurant offers several set menus to satisfy your seafood cravings.

Enjoy the ultimate farm-to-table seafood dining experience at Smith Marine Floating Restaurant
Photo: Smith Marine

Smith Marine was built in 2006 with a focus on breeding sea bass, tiger grouper, flower crab, mussels, lobsters and other live seafood. Besides eating your heart out, you can also take a short walk on the decks to see how the fish is farmed.

Advance booking is required as the restaurant does not accept walk-ins. The restaurant will help to arrange a chartered bumboat from Changi Village Ferry Terminal. The boat ride costs $100 for 12 persons for the two-way trip, and payment is to be made directly to the boatman upon embarkation.

Nestled in the north-eastern part of Singapore, the Seletar neighbourhood is pretty much under the radar and known for its rustic allure.

Considered one of Singapore’s best-kept secrets, Seletar is where you can enjoy nature and an array of fun outdoor activities. It has cycling routes, wetlands, cosy cafes, swanky eateries and more.

Not too far away is Seletar Island, a tranquil yet undiscovered island located off the northern coastal region of Singapore. Before redevelopment plans were put in place, Seletar Island was originally the home of rubber plantations

and even a military airbase for the British way back in the 1920s, just before World War II.

It is also home to Seletar Airport, Singapore’s second airport serving commercial flights. Spanning over 160ha, the airport mostly serves smaller-sized private and business jet airlines and aircraft today.

For a little adventure up north, make your way to Seletar. We’ve rounded up seven best things to do at this hidden gem.

1. Lower Seletar Reservoir

Lower Seletar Reservoir is the perfect spot to get a proper dose of nature. Spend a day leisurely paddling a kayak at the Lower Seletar Water Sports Centre (LSWSC), or cast your rods at the fishing jetty for a chance to catch large snakeheads and tilapias.

A single kayak costs $7 for an hour with a minimum of two hours required, while a double kayak is priced at $24 for two hours. Get more information and make your bookings at LSWSC here! Do note that the fishing jetty is currently targeted towards hobbyists, so you’ll be expected to bring your own equipment and bait.

Photo: Camelot Pte Ltd

Alternatively, take a short stroll down the boardwalk at Rower’s Bay Park (found within the reservoir). This is one of the popular places to cycle in Singapore, sporting a 60km cycling track that belongs to the first phase of the Round Island Route (RIR). While you’re there, do keep an eye out for wildlife creatures like Grey Herons, Dragonflies or Copper-cheeked frogs. Be sure to follow general park safety rules like maintaining your distance and refraining from feeding the animals for your own safety, and have all the cycling gear you need for a comfortable ride.

For those looking to unwind and chill out, head down to The Heritage Bridge instead. Built to resemble old-fashioned kelongs (traditional offshore platforms) on stilts, it’s the ideal place to bask in the sun, enjoy a picnic or soak up captivating sunset views.

2. Seletar Fishing Village

Located near Lower Seletar Reservoir and Yishun Dam, Seletar Fishing Village is a hidden spot that may look shabby at first glance, until you take the time to explore it.

This is Singapore’s last fishing village, a well-kept secret and one of Seletar’s most interesting spots – like a time capsule from the past! Pay a visit and you’ll soon notice how time flows much slower there.

Photo: @picsque_andychong / Instagram

The place is known to be the most charming when the tide is low, especially during the golden hour. In the evenings, you’re likely to find photographers walking down to the swamp area. With the stunning view of the setting sun, topped with barren trees in the foreground, pictures taken at Seletar Fishing Village often look as though they were shot from a different era (or country).

Have your monopod ready when you’re here, and if you have a film camera, the rustic prints will definitely be worthwhile. You’ll also find kampung huts and a wooden jetty called Jenal Jetty there. These are used by a small pool of local fishermen, but note that they’re out of bounds to the public.

3. Hampstead Wetlands Park

Another green sanctuary for rest and recreation is Hampstead Wetlands Park, located right in the middle of Seletar Aerospace Park. Featuring boardwalks and a nature trail, this 3.23ha wetlands is home to a variety of wildlife that inhabit the freshwater ecosystems.

From the viewing decks, you might spot butterflies, dragonflies, and even a wide variety of birds like the White-throated Kingfishers foraging for food. It’s also one of the best places to cycle in Singapore, thanks to its scenic routes.

Photo: Xperience DMC Private Limited

With the wide diversity of flora and fauna, it’s no wonder that photographers and animal-lovers are often found at Hampstead Wetlands Park. Best of all, the park’s rather convenient to get to – it’s only a 30-minute bus ride away from Sengkang MRT.

4. The Oval at Seletar Aerospace Park

For some aviation-themed fun, head to The Oval at Seletar Aerospace Park, a refurbished colonial site that’s now an enclave for food and family adventures.

With no tall buildings around The Oval, it feels like you’re in the countryside. Instead of skyscrapers, you’ll find a slew of wide open fields and unique playgrounds there – anything from tables of aeroplane ludo to a propeller plane and slides with aviation motifs for the little ones to play at.

Aside from these activities, The Oval also provides an opportunity for some sightseeing and exploration of history. Colonial black and white houses can also be found at Hyde Park Gate. These bungalows were once used by the British Royal Air Force in Singapore.

Wheeler’s Estate
Photo: Singapore Tourism Board

There’s also a cluster of quaint cafes in the vicinity that’s great for quick pit-stops after all that playtime. At Wheeler’s Estate which has spacious verandahs and greenhouses, tuck into western eats like Half Classic Beer Roasted Chicken, Beer Battered Fish & Chips, BBQ Pork Ribs and Pumpkin Tabbouleh Salad.

For heartier bites, head to Brewerkz for crowd favourites like Buttermilk Chicken & Pancakes, American Cowboy Burger, Salt Pepper Baby Squid, Spiced Beef Pot Pie and Tex-Mex Pulled Pork Cheese Fries. Wash it all down with a refreshing glass of house craft beer.

5. Wildseed Cafe and Bar at The Summerhouse

Offering breezy alfresco dining spaces that are pet-friendly as well as an air-conditioned garden dining area, Wildseed Cafe serves all-day breakfast, brunch and lunch offerings including sandwiches, floral cakes, pastries and freshly roasted coffee.

Dig into favourites like Big Pan Breakfast, Wildseed Thick Toast, Wildseed Superfood Salad, Smashed Avocado with Bacon, Soft-Shell Chilli Crab Linguine and Wagyu Beef Burger; and an Afternoon Tea Set for two persons.

Photo: @wildseedsg.summerhouse / Facebook

The cafe is nestled on the ground level of The Summerhouse, surrounded by greenery. The cafe transforms into Wildseed Bar from 5pm onwards, with ambient lighting and live music to create a chill ambience where you can enjoy beers, cocktails and grilled favourites like Grilled Black Angus Oyster Blade, Smoked Chicken Leg, Iberico Pork Ribs and Pan-Seared Seabass; pizzas; pastas; and bar snacks.

Don’t miss Wildseed Bar’s Garden Grill Out every Friday and Saturday where you can tuck into mouthwatering barbecued delights in an open courtyard.

6. Hangar66 Cafe

Another great spot for foodies is Hanger66 Cafe, an old-school aviation themed eatery tucked away at the edge of Seletar Airfield. Check out its unique wall and interior decor elements like runway markings and even tables that resemble cut-up sections of metal plane wings.

Photo: Hangar66 Cafe

The main dining area is located right beside clear windows that provide a prime view of a working hanger where planes are kept. At one end of the dining area sits a retro autogyro (aka gyroplane) – a type of rotorcraft that uses unpowered rotors to develop lift. Both rare and fancy, it certainly makes for a great photo-op.

Hangar66’s menu features a variety of western-style plates like Big Breakfast, Grilled Ribeye Steak, Jumbo Chicken Schnitzel, and Shrimp & Mushroom Linguine, as well as Japanese options like sushi rolls, ramen, udon, rice bowls and bento sets. To satisfy your sweet cravings, there are desserts like Homemade Tiramisu, Belgian Waffle with Ice Cream, and Ice Cream Scoops.

7. Chow Cute Cafe

Another pet-friendly cafe is Chow Cute Cafe which feeds both people and pets!

Treats your furballs to “human grade” Chowcuterie Chicken/Beef/Mutton/Salmon/Vegan Board while you enjoy a selection of pastry bites like Macaron, Mini Eclair, Fruit Tart, Mini Mushroom Puff, Mini Chicken Puff, and Mini Chicken/Egg Mayo Croissant.

1. Get snacks, drinks, health and beauty products from a convenience store repurposed from shipping containers

In the past, visitors to Lazarus Island had to bring their own food and drinks since there was no convenience store on the island. That’s no longer necessary if you’re visiting on the weekends and public holidays now that Sol by BDC Convenience Store has opened.

Reconnect with nature at Into the Woods, a glamping resort focussed on slow living. It has nine furnished safari tents for couples and families, each one complete with eco-friendly amenities, fresh linen and a heavy-duty canvas tent that opens up to uninterrupted coastal views.

At the heart of Into the Woods is Sukha Lodge, a communal space that houses a library of books, a selection of board games, and an environment bathed in complete serenity. On occasion, the lodge is where Into the Woods hosts special workshops and events.

Photo: Into the Woods

The resort possesses an eco-friendly ethos and it invites guests to weekly beach clean-ups. While it does not offer pre-cooked meals, it has food bundles that you can put together easily.

Note that tents do not come with ensuite toilets. There are four shared bathrooms available for all guests.

5. Stay in a tiny house

Experience the tiny house lifestyle in nature at Tiny Away Escape @ Lazarus Island, developed by Singapore-based ecotourism start-up Big Tiny. Low-carbon and sustainable, each of the five compact, eco-friendly tiny houses has its own unique theme.

Tiny House 1900 has a colonial-era aesthetic while 1960 showcases an industrial theme. 1980 presents a retro vibe, 2000 features a modern design and 2017 was inspired by the year of Big Tiny’s establishment.

Photo: Big Tiny

The tiny houses’ industrial exteriors feel straight out of Art Box, but inside, you’ll find designs inspired by Nordic and Japanese disciplines.

The standard occupancy for each tiny house is two adult guests but they can accommodate up to three adults or two adults with two children. Plus, three of the tiny house rooms are pet-friendly!

Ready to embark on a green adventure through Singapore’s revitalised Rail Corridor? With the Rail Corridor now stretching from lush sanctuaries in the north to dynamic community nodes in the south, every step leads to a new discovery.

Along this 24km-long green passage, you’ll find everything from rich heritage at the Bukit Timah Railway Station to lush stretches near Clementi Forest, offering a refreshing retreat in the heart of the city. The corridor is divided into three main stretches – North (10km), South (10km) and Central (4km) – and each offer different landscapes and levels of difficulty to cater to every type of outdoor or nature enthusiast.

Exciting developments are also on the horizon, including the upcoming node under Queensway Viaduct set for completion in 2027, the restoration of the historic Tanjong Pagar Railway Station and the transformation of the former Bukit Timah Fire Station into a bustling community hub by mid-2025. Each of these projects promises to enhance the Rail Corridor’s appeal, weaving even more cultural and recreational opportunities.

So put on your sneakers or get on your bicycle and set off on an exploration of this sprawling urban oasis. Whether you’re an ardent nature lover or just looking for a family-friendly outdoor activity, the Rail Corridor promises a treasure trove of fun experiences.

SOUTHERN STRETCH

In 2016, over 30,000 people turned up to say farewell to the Tanjong Pagar Railway Station, marking the end of an era for a key terminus of the Rail Corridor. With the station closed for renovations, the story of the Rail Corridor continues to unfold along its approximately 10km southern stretch.

1. Clementi Forest

Away from the hustle near the highways, the path meanders through the serene Clementi Forest, a jungle escape replete with towering trees.

Photo: @nparksbuzz/ Instagram

This section offers a slice of adventure, with its muddy trails and fallen trees providing a rugged escape for those looking to venture off the beaten path. It’s a true hidden gem, largely untouched and perfect for those seeking a bit of wilderness.

2. Buona Vista Community Node

Sitting cosily at the crossroads of North Buona Vista Road and Commonwealth Avenue, this 1.6ha marvel is the new hotspot in town.

A world of activities await here. Flex your muscles or find your zen in the sprawling 900sqm “plug-and-play” area under the North Buona Vista Link viaduct. Kids will love the whimsical playground peppered with biophilic designs that blur the lines between nature and play.

Photo: @littledayout / Instagram

This new community node is not just a pretty space. It also features a 500sqm lawn doubling as an outdoor event haven, ready to host anything from yoga sessions to starlit movie nights. Stroll along paths lined with vegetated, shallow water-filled ditches that mimic the historical marshland landscapes of the Rail Corridor, and keep your eyes peeled for critically endangered plants such as Lepironia articulata and the sleek narrow-leaf cattail.

Perfectly positioned near The Metropolis and the upcoming Elementum, and a stone’s throw from Buona Vista MRT interchange, the Buona Vista node is a gateway to greenery, heritage and boundless fun for everyone!

GETTING THERE
By bus: Take 74, 91, 95, 100, 105, 106, 111, 147, 185, 191, 196, 198 or 200 and alight opposite Blk 43
By MRT: Exit at Buona Vista MRT Station. From there, head towards Exit D and enter the node via accesses near The Metropolis.

3. Holland Green Linear Park
